Stream is Microsoft's video hosting platform that allows users to create, share, and interact with video content. In addition to uploading existing videos, users can also create video and screen recording presentations within Stream. 


Please note: Recordings are limited to 15 minutes and this feature is only available in 

Chrome browser.


Step 1: Accessing Stream

Stream is part of the Office 365 suite available to all KU faculty, staff, and students. To access Stream, navigate to www.office.com and login with your KU email address and password. 


Note: You will initially enter your email address on Microsoft's login screen. Once you've entered your full email address, you may be redirected to the KU login screen.


Select Stream from the list of available apps. If Stream does not appear in the main list, click "All apps" to view the full list.



Step 2: Create Your Video

In Stream, click "+ Create" and choose "Record screen or video."



    Note: If prompted, be sure to allow Stream to access your video camera and microphone.


Choose your microphone and webcam and decide what you'd like to record:


  • Screen and camera: records your screen and your webcam and mic.
  • Screen only: records only your screen and mic.
  • Camera only: records your only webcam and mic.


Click the Record button to go to the next step.



If you've chosen to record your screen, the next step will be to determine which part of your screen you'd like to record. You can record your entire desktop, a specific application window, or a specific browser tab. Once you've made your selection, click "Share."



The timer will count down from 3 seconds and then the recording will begin. You'll see a running timer during your recording. When you are finished recording. click the Pause button to stop. Then click "Next."



Preview your recording. If you want to start over, you can click "Record again." If you are happy with your recording, click "Upload to Stream."



The upload process will begin. While your video is uploading, you can begin to configure the settings. Click "Update video details." 



Step 3: Customize Your Video Settings

Details

  1. Provide a name for your video recording.
  2. Add a description, if desired, about the video. 
  3. You can adjust the thumbnail for the video or upload your own.



Permissions

By default videos uploaded to Stream will be private and only accessible if shared directly with an individual, group, or channel.


"Allow everyone in your company to view this video" is NOT recommended.



Sharing with Individuals

With the "Share with" menu set to "People," search for the individual you want to share your video with by typing the first part of their email address and clicking the magnifying glass icon to search. Select the user from the list of suggested results to add them to the video.




Sharing with Groups

With the "Share with" menu set to "Groups," search for the name of your group by typing the first part of the group name in the search field. Click the magnifying glass icon to search. Select the group from the list of suggested results to add it to the video.


If you are not sure of your group name, please check with your instructor.




Sharing with Channels

With the "Share with" menu set to "Channels," search for the name of your channel by typing the first part of the channel name in the search field. Click the magnifying glass icon to search. Select the channel from the list of suggested results to add it to the video. If you are adding your video to a group channel, the group will be applied as well.


If you are not sure of your channel name, please check with your instructor.



Options

Determine if viewers should have the ability to comment on your video. This resembles YouTube commenting. Please check with your instructor if commenting is required or recommended for your assignment.


It is recommended that you use the option to generate a caption file. This will allow visually impaired individuals equal access to your video.



Step 4: Publish and Share Your Video

After configuring the settings, be sure to "Publish" your video. Click the "Share" button to get the link to your video.



If you were instructed by your professor to share the direct link to your video in D2L, you can click the “Share” button to copy the link. Post this link in D2L as directed.
