Including an image, links to your presence on the web, or any other relevant information helps establish an online persona for your professor and classmates to get to know you. This article walks through the process of adding an image to your profile.


Adding an image to your profile

In the upper right of the D2L page, you will find your name with an image placeholder on the left and a dropdown arrow on the right. Click on the drop-down arrow to reveal a list of menu items. Select “Profile” from the list of menu items.


On the next page, you will be able to add information to your profile. You can stick to just adding a profile image, but feel free to add additional information as you like. Remember, any information you add to this page is accessible by everyone in the system.


You’ll see a generic placeholder image. Click “Change Picture” below the placeholder.



A popup window will ask you to select a profile picture. Choose "My Computer" and then drag-and-drop the image into the window from your desktop, or click “Upload” to browse. After your picture is selected, click “Add.”


Landscape-oriented images will be re-sized and cropped to fit the size of the window and the portrait orientation.


That’s it! Your image will now appear next to your profile information and in the Classlist.


*It is expected that all profile images are appropriate for an academic setting. The Office of Distance Education reserves the right to remove any image that is considered inappropriate.*


Resizing Images for Profile Image

Your profile picture may need to be resized before uploading it to D2L. Choose the instructions based on whether you are using a Windows computer or a Mac computer.


Windows Picture Resizing Instructions

  1. In Windows, open the Paint application.
  2. Click the Paint button, choose Open, and locate the image you want to resize and click Open.
  3. On the Home tab, in the Image group, click Resize.
  4. In the Resize and Skew dialog box, select the Maintain aspect ratio check box so that the resized picture will have the same aspect ratio as the original picture.
  5. If the Maintain aspect ratio check box is selected, you only need to enter the horizontal value (width) or vertical value (height). The other box in the Resize area is updated automatically.
  6. Do one of the following in the Resize area, and then click OK:
    1. To resize your picture to a certain percentage, click Percentage, and then enter a percentage to reduce the width by in the Horizontal box or a percentage to reduce the height by in the Vertical box. You may need to do this more than once.
    2. To resize the picture so it's a specific size, click Pixels, and then enter a new width in the Horizontal box or a new height in the Vertical box.
  7. Click the Paint button, point to Save as, and then click the picture file type for the resized image.
  8. Type a new file name in the File name box, and then click Save.


Mac Picture Resizing Instructions

  1. Open the image using the default Preview application. 
  2. Click Tools on the toolbar and select Adjust Size.
  3. The Image Dimensions property box will open. Change the resolution to 72, and then click the OK button.
  4. Click File, Export, Save, and give the image a new name.
  5. Close the application.
