Calculation Options

Next, find the Calculation Options tab and select it. This tab will allow you to fine-tune the grading behavior of D2L by changing your grading system, choosing whether to release the calculated (automatic) or adjusted (manual) final grade, and how D2L should handle ungraded items.

To set up weighted grades, click the radial button to select Weighted as your grading system.

After saving these settings, the Manage Grades page should have an additional column for weight. By default, D2L assigns every item or category a 10-point value. The gradebook will also display a warning when the total of all weights does not sum to 100%.

Categories

Categories can be helpful in creating weighted gradebooks. Categories are weighted like individual items, so they can be used to efficiently group similar items like recurring quizzes or essays. To create a category from the Manage Grades view, click New and select Category.

Manage Grades allows instructors to create new grade items and categories.

When creating the new category, you will be presented with several options. After providing a name for the category, you will be prompted to assign a weight. This weight will be used for the entire category, and constituent grade items will be scaled accordingly.

Grading and distribution options for a category.Distribution

Under Distribution, select how items should be scaled in the category:

  • Manually assign weight allows you to define specific values for each item in the category.
  • Distribute weights by points will evenly scale all assignments according to the category's weight.
  • Distribute weight evenly across all items will assign all items in the category the average value according to the number of contributing grade items, and allows for the dropping of any number of high or low grades.

Once satisfied with your category settings, click Save and Close.

Grade items can be added to categories individually by click the arrow next to them and selecting Edit or by checking the box next to multiple items and clicking Bulk Edit above the list of items.
