Microsoft Authenticator is an app that allows students to verify their identity when logging into KU services. Unlike other verification methods, no network connection is required after setting up the Authenticator.

Setting Up Microsoft Authenticator 

Via Sign-On

  1. Download the app from the App Store or Play Store
  2. Open it. If prompted, Allow notifications.
  3. Accept the Privacy Statement and choose whether you would like to share usage data with Microsoft.
  4. Click Add work or school account.
  5.  Click Sign In (or see below for instructions for adding via QR).
  6. Enter your KU email address and click Next.
  7. You will be prompted to verify your identity through one of your sign-in methods. If prompted to use authenticator, click Sign in another way and select your preferred method.
  8. Once signed in, Microsoft Authenticator is ready to use.

Via QR Code

  1. Navigate to https://mysigning.microsoft.com/security-info and click Add sign-in method. 

  2. Select Authenticator app.

  3. If you have not yet installed the app, do so before clicking Next. 

  4. If prompted on your phone, allow notifications from the app. Click Next on your screen.

  5. A QR code will appear on screen. Scan it from the Authenticator App to add your account.

  6. After the account has been added, you will be prompted to respond to a test notification.

  7. If you see this screen, you have successfully added your account.

Using Microsoft Authenticator

Signing in with Authenticator

  • When signing in, select Approve a request on my Microsoft Authenticator app.
  • A number will appear on-screen. On your phone, a notification will appear and ask you to type in that number. Enter the number and click Yes to sign in.

Signing in with a Verification Code

This method can be used when you do not have a network connection on your personal device.

  • When signing in, select Use a verification code. 
  • Open Microsoft Authenticator and select your student email address.
  • A one-time passcode will be generated every 30 seconds. Use this code to sign in.
